After the disappointing releases of Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* Marvel returned to the studios this weekend with The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

“Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet,” the film’s synopsis reads.

“Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”

Expectations were High

Heading into the weekend, it was clear that The Fantastic Four would deliver a strong opening frame. The expectation was that the film would earn somewhere in the ballpark of $100 million to $110 million at domestic theaters.

With strong critical reviews and significant word of mouth, however, Marvel’s First Family has soared past those expectations.

A Heroic Opening

Through Friday, the latest Marvel Studios release has grossed $57 million. The expectation is that the film will end its first weekend at $125 in domestic theaters. Adding another $106 million from overseas, Fantastic Four is expected to deliver a global opening of between $220 million and $230 million.

That number would not only surpass Brave New World and Thunderbolts, but also Superman, which has been dominating theaters lately.

Additionally, The Fantastic Four has earned an  “A-” CinemaScore rating, which should point to an extended box office run.

After back-to-back disappointments, the MCU is back atop the box office heap. The only question now is how far The Fantastic Four can go.
