Naver WEBTOON is set to roll out a new short-form video feature called Cuts on its app this September, allowing users to read webtoons in animated video formats similar to Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.

Cuts will offer a new way to experience stories by transforming WEBTOON content into short, animated clips. In addition to highlight-style summaries of existing webtoons, Cuts will also introduce original content exclusive to the feature.

One such original series will center on “Ae-yong,” the cat character from the popular webtoon My Daughter is a Zombie. Titled A Day in the Life of Ae-yong Kim, the new series will be a lighthearted, slice-of-life comedy.

Inspired by the success of YouTube Shorts and TikTok, NAVER WEBTOON‘s strategy aims to lower the barrier to entry and crowdsource a broad variety of content, from studio-produced shorts to experimental animations by amateurs. The company is also exploring the integration of generative AI tools to assist creators in producing animation content.

Earlier in May, Naver WEBTOON‘s parent company, WEBTOON Entertainment, introduced a similar short-form feature called “New & Hot” on its North American platform, focused on previews and summaries.

Unlike that version, the domestic Cuts service will provide both recap content and entirely new shorts created specifically for the format.

The launch reflects a broader trend in the webtoon industry, as audiences are increasingly consuming entertainment in short-form formats. Competitors are also joining the shift: in April, Kakao Entertainment launched “Helix Shorts,” an AI-generated webtoon trailer feature on Kakao Page; while Ridibooks introduced a global short-drama platform called Kanta in Japan earlier this month.
